You’ll note that this one is not entitled “Alien: Covenant“.
At least, you’ll notice it if you don’t grab it off the shelf at the video store in too big a hurry and miss the big-budget film you actually wanted.
This one is yet another Asylum Mockbuster. It doesn’t bear much resemblance to the film it is supposed to supplant, but then many of them don’t, particularly. We do get some shots of black ooze producing worm-like creatures, as in Prometheus, but that’s as close as we come.
Instead, it’s set on Earth with flying, Godzilla-sized dragon-like creatures that breath fire.
Because this is a low-budget mockbuster, they’re CGI. And identical. And there are only three of them. And we only see all three together once in the whole film and that for a matter of moments.
But we pretty much knew that as soon as we saw “The Asylum” in the credits.
Nor did it come as much of a surprise when they spent most of the running time on a new invention and training a set of pilots to use it, complete with a touch of Top Gun. After all, that’s cheaper than monster effects.
However, you should probably avoid thinking about why a creature from Mars, where the temperature is cold enough at the poles to freeze Carbon Dioxide, would be so vulnerable to the cold.
I suppose it is entertaining enough, if you recognize what you’re letting yourself in for. But I can’t say too much of the film sticks in my mind, even through I saw it yesterday.
Which is not very impressive.
But, hey, at least it’s short.
