Revolt (2017)

This one has been compared to District 9, although I suspect that is because both were made in South Africa, and that there is, admittedly, a similarly gritty quality to both films (although, in many respects, it reminds me a bit more of Skyline).

A soldier wakes up in a jail cell, with no memory of how he got there, and learns that the Earth has been invaded by alien robots.  He goes on the run with a fellow prisoner, hoping to join up with other American forces so he can fight back.

Curiously, while made in South Africa, it is actually set in Kenya.  As most of the film takes place in tiny towns and wilderness, I suppose there really isn’t much to identify where it was shot.  Certainly, this is a very good looking film.

It has also been put together with a lot of care and skill and it looks far more expensive than it actually is.  The editing and cinematography are outstanding, and the effects are quite serviceable — and the alien drones do have a distinct presence to them.

But somehow it just seems a little less than the sum of the parts, although I’d be hard pressed to say why.  There’s a rather surprising development at the two-thirds mark or thereabouts, which is meant to be a shocking loss for the hero, but somehow it doesn’t seem to have as much effect on the audience as it should.

However, I find it rather annoying that, as so many trailers do these days, the trailer for Revolt gives away a vital secret not revealed until the film’s finale.   Why in the world do they keep doing this?

Still, it’s quite good as low budget SF films go, with solid performances, and a reasonably interesting story.   It’ll do until something better comes along.

Which, let’s face it, might take a while.
